WHAT IS PLASMA?
Technology & Published Data
Plasma is one of the four fundamental states of matter, the others being solid, liquid, and gas. A plasma can be created by heating a gas or subjecting it to a strong electromagnetic field. Plasma is made up of electrons, ions, and neutral species. Low temperature plasmas have the ions and neutrals at a much lower temperature, whereas electrons are much “hotter”. The overall temperature of the plasma is can be close to body temperature.
Plasma is commonly used in many industries to modify and/or clean surfaces for custom applications ranging from the medical, automotive, food, and electronics industries. More recently, the biological and medical applications of plasmas have witnessed a great interest from the plasma and medical research communities. This is due to promising applications in medical research such as electrosurgery, tissue engineering, surface modification of biocompatible materials, and the sterilization of heat sensitive materials and instruments.

Oral Disinfection
Plasma Brush treatment of S. mutans results in a 99.9999% reduction within 15 seconds.
Teeth Whitening
Plasma treatment reduces in-office teeth whitening chair time from a hour to 30 minutes.
Plasma Brush applications are waiting for FDA and CE clearance
CLINICAL TRIAL
ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT01529606
A clinical trial was completed in 2014 with total enrollment of 102 patients.
The objective of the clinical trial portion of the study is to compare the longevity and durability of dental composite restorations created using the plasma brush, to that of the standard care in dentistry for treating dental cavities, and effects on caries prevention.
For patients in standard treatment group, they will receive composite resin restoration for all decayed teeth and standard preventive treatment (cleaning and fluoride varnish application) at baseline. For patients in plasma treatment group, they will receive plasma treatment after cavity preparation, composite resin restoration, standard preventive treatment followed by plasma treatment for non-carious teeth.
